This complex of buildings stands on an ancient site of justice and they span a period of over 500 years. The buildings belong to the Manor whose Deeds date back to the 12C. The merchant guild was formed in the 13C and later became the Guild of St. Mary. The Guild was dissolved at the Reformation. The buildings were converted for domestic purposes after 1583, and in Victorian times shop fronts were inserted, and the north gable added.
The Council Chamber of the Newport Town Council has a magnificent timber roof with trusses dated back to 1486, which were once part of an open hall.
